About Honma Beres IS-06

The Honma Beres range has a long tradition. This iron is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious that any manufacturer has ever brought to market. But the Honma Beres is not just about prestige - the quality behind it is actually in a different league. The club head itself is designed for players looking for maximum length and forgiveness. In this category the Honma Beres scores well in every test for over 6 decades. So you can say that the guys from Sakata have enough experience to outperform other manufacturers in this field - and it turns out they actually do.

With the Honma Beres you can choose between 2 and 5 stars. Both the heads and the shafts differ according to the number of stars. You can choose any variation at ExactGolf.

Many golfers are surprised why they should pay these surcharges for 3, 4 or 5 stars, but this is actually explained quickly. The higher the number of stars, the higher the quality, especially for the shaft. Because it makes the decisive difference and here Honma shows its whole class. Above all, it is about distortions during the swing which are stronger with a bad shaft than with a really good one, the so-called torque. This is already minimized with the "standard version" of the Beres as good as possible. With more stars, however, even more effort is needed to produce shafts with even less torque. This effort is extreme and therefore costs a lot of money. But the result speaks for itself.

The Honma Beres are for golfers who do not want to make any compromises in quality and are willing to pay an appropriate price for it. These golfers will not find anything comparable on the market.

Iron set from 6-SW, including Gap-Wedge.

Please keep in mind that when you select a longer shaft than standard a custom Honma order is required. Meaning that Honma has to do the customization, not ExactGolf. And this requires about 8 weeks of additional shipping time. This is not the case for all other customizations and also not for shorter shafts.

IS-06 Set from 4, 5 or 6?

The right set size. The most important question you have to ask yourself is the right set size. In this case there's no right or wrong. It must fit you. A set of 5-SW is considered standard, which means that it starts only from iron 5, but comes with three wedges, namely PW, GW and SW. Usually this range of wedges is sufficient - at least for the classic Beres players who can do without a 60° Lobwedge. With the set of 5-SW you are usually well positioned and can add hybrids and fairway woods depending on your preferences. This constellation is normally sufficient for average players.

Players who are below average or who like to fill up their set with hybrids can also use a set of iron 6 or higher. However, this is a special order and you should contact us beforehand. We are at your disposal by email, live chat or telephone.

Stronger players or those who are rather not fans of hybrids can also choose the IS-06 iron set from iron 4. However, this should only be considered if you really have no difficulty to actually get an iron 4 from the fairway into the air. Otherwise this selection is not recommended.

By the way, there is a reason why we offer the Honma Beres IS-06 iron set only with the corresponding wedges. Honma would like to offer an iron set that is perfectly matched. If the set ended with the pitching wedge you would have to buy other wedges again and here the question arises which one exactly? Honma takes this decision off your hands and is convinced that this way we can offer you a more harmonious set of wedges. And to be honest, the success also proves them right.

Choice of stars: 2, 3, 4 or even 5 stars?

The stars are a hallmark of Honma and not just a status symbol. It's not about being able to claim you have a set with more stars than anyone else. In short, the stars express the quality of the shaft. That doesn't mean that a 2 star shaft is bad. On the contrary. Also the 2 star shaft is so much better than practically everything on the market. Honma knows how to build shafts that are light and soft but still have little torque like no other manufacturer. These are the twists during the stroke that you absolutely want to avoid because they push the ball in the wrong direction.

So it's up to you. There is no question that the surcharge for 5 stars is extremely high. Only very few players allow themselves this luxury and can then claim to possess the best of the best in this segment.

Shaft selection at the Beres IS-06

There is only one shaft to choose from, the ArmRQ X. It is available in three weight classes: 47, 52 and 60g and three different flexes. There is a reason why no other shafts are offered: Honma is so good with these shafts that offering additional shafts makes no sense. They have perfected these shafts for the "Beres target group". Other shafts would overstrain the player in the selection and would not bring him any advantage. The three different weight levels are usually also sufficient for fine tuning. It is clear that all these shafts are relatively light. Therefore the Beres IS-06 is not suitable for players with high club head speeds. These are better advised with the Honma Tour World series, for example.

The flex is available in Regular, Stiff/Regular and Stiff. Stiff/Regular is simply a flex that lies between Stiff and Regular. Most often we sell the 52g version in Regular. If you swing a little faster or want to have more weight in your hand, you can adjust the weight and flex accordingly.

Shaft length

As a rule of thumb, we only make adjustments here if we are dealing with unusually large or small players. One thing should not be neglected in this case: adjusting the shaft length also changes the swing weight, i.e. the club "feels" much heavier or lighter although it is not at all. Basically, this can only be attributed to the leverage effect. For you, however, this means that you are normally well advised to use the standard length. If you are unsure, please contact us.

Longer shaft and different lie

Please also note that a longer shaft as well as an adjustment of the lie is automatically a Honma Custom order and may require 8-10 weeks delivery time. This is due to the fact that Honma makes these adjustments itself and not us at ExactGolf. Theoretically, however, you can purchase all variants and make adjustments through us.

Choice of grip and grip thickness for the Beres IS-06

The grip is also a very individual subject and normally our customers are satisfied with the standard Honma grips. Standard doesn't sound special, but Honma's standard is still very, very good. Nevertheless, we will of course comply with all your wishes and you have a wide selection of alternative grips with us which we will be happy to install for you at no extra charge. However, this is only really recommendable for players who have a real preference in terms of grips.

The grip strength depends above all on the length of the fingers. Regular is already suitable for relatively short fingers. Depending on the length you should choose one, two or three additional tapes. The Midsize grip is really only something for very long fingers and should only be chosen then. The performance suffers significantly if you play with a grip that is much too thick. If you are unsure about this, just ask us. However, we are also happy to correct a wrong selection. If you notice that you do not get along with the selected grip strength at all, we will gladly mount another grip for you.

About Honma

The history of Honma is absolutely unique and everyone who has been involved with this brand knows that. Honma stands like no other brand in the golf industry for perfection, elegance, precision, individuality and extravagance. No other company can combine these qualities in one.

All Honma clubs are handmade in Japan, Sakata. Not only the club heads, but also the own shafts are drawn by hand and reach thereby an incomparable quality. This is particularly evident in the 3, 4 and 5 star shafts which are used in the Beres series. These stars do not simply represent a high price tag and status symbol. The higher the number of stars, the higher the quality of the shaft, which is a bit special because it is very soft and still has little torque. That means: the shaft plays extremely comfortable and delivers a minimum of "twists" which push the ball in a direction where it doesn't belong.

Each Honma club is unique and can be individually adjusted if necessary. The quality assurance is as strict as nowhere else and no lack escapes the trained eyes from Japan - even if it is so minimal. While the quality of most other manufacturers, especially the big names, fluctuates extremely, Honma delivers clubs in exactly the same quality. That means the exact same weight, same shape, etc.

No compromises are made especially with the shafts. The shaft is often underestimated, but it influences the swing enormously. Shafts built into Honma clubs are not only of the same quality and extremely high quality, the shafts are also reliable in terms of length and weight. The shafts used by other golf brands vary enormously in this respect and can have a great influence on the swing weight, for example if a shaft is only minimally shorter than it should be. You don't have this problem with Honma. And guaranteed not when you buy from us. Because we at ExactGolf take our mission seriously and measure and weigh all our clubs carefully before shipping. In this way we can guarantee the highest quality true to the Honma motto.

Honma Beres IS-06 Iron Review

The Beres IS-06 iron is Honma's current flagship and one of the most expensive irons in the world. The price varies depending on the star version, but even with two stars the rate is not less than 3000€. Reason enough to take a close look and analyse why you should actually spend so much money on a set of golf clubs.

Therefore we have tested the Beres IS-06 iron in the 3-star version with a 60g Stiff shaft. But first of all the obvious things:

The optics of the Beres IS-06

The Beres IS-06 is a bit sportier than the IE-06 and IE-06 for women. You can also see this when you put it next to these irons. The face is not necessarily smaller but the sole is much thinner. But that's all relative, because the Beres IS-06 is still a "double shell" with a very large face and wide sole.

The 3 star version has a lot more gold elements in the head. However, this is above all a gimmick and makes the club look more noble. It does not necessarily influence the behaviour of the club.

The cavity in the club head is relatively large, which is crucial for the performance. This makes it possible to place as much weight as possible in the lower part of the clubface. The face itself is extremely thin which is difficult to realize from a manufacturing point of view, but has some advantages as we will see soon.

Forgiveness, ball speed and feeling

And already we have reached the actual topic. That's what a Honma Beres player is all about. He wants maximum forgiveness and make his game as easy as possible. And here Honma delivers like hardly any other manufacturer. The clubface is not oversized but the hits feel basically the same everywhere. Not only that. The hits also feel very soft. There is hardly an area on the clubface that gives an unpleasant feeling.

Decisive for this is the special construction of the club head, the extremely thin face and the oversized undercut. Basically you can imagine that the shots feel like a blade and it doesn't matter where the balls are hit. Only very thinly hit balls feel as bad on the Beres IS-06 as on any other club, but no club in the world can turn topped balls into a good shot.

Already at the moment of impact you can feel how much speed the ball absorbs. Even low club head speeds develop an unbelievable acceleration.

Also decisive is the trajectory of balls hit in the direction of the toe or heel. Here one hardly notices an influence. So it is not as if you have to reckon with a large deviation.

Playability and Launch

Now we come to the only weakness of this club, which is actually not a real weakness. Because when I play an iron like the Beres IS-06, I don't want to deliberately integrate big curves into my game. It's true that targeted draws or fades are more difficult than with a cavity back or blade iron. But the target group of the Beres IS-06 doesn't need this kind of shots. That's why Honma did everything right here. This does not mean that draws and fades are not possible. It only takes a lot more effort.

As far as the launch is concerned, the Beres IS-06 is like from another world. It's unbelievable how easy it is to get the ball into the air even with minimal clubhead speeds. Honma has done a great job here and definitely delivers what they promise. Because the launch is so easy, the club can also be played at very low club head speeds.

The unique shafts of the Beres range

It's no secret: the in-house ArmRQ shafts are simply unique for the following reason. No other manufacturer is able to build such light graphite shafts and still convince with their performance (measured in torque). In our test we tried the heaviest shaft with 60g. The IS-06 is also available in 47g and 52g. What you can say even with this 60g Stiff shaft is that the whip effect is fully effective. This effect even intensifies with the lighter and softer shafts. And yet the performance doesn't drop much. Of course, these shafts have their limits somewhere and these are at too high club head speeds. Therefore it is also important to buy the Beres shaft according to your individual swing. It is not a club for tour professionals. The shafts are simply designed for under- to average club head speeds.

Conclusion and recommendation

At Beres IS-06 you don't have to beat around the bush for long. It is a club for a certain target group that has quite clear ideas about a club: Maximum forgiveness, high launch and high ball speeds with average power input. And that's exactly what Honma delivers like no other. There are reasons why Honma can charge so much more for this club than any other manufacturer.

That's why you can make the recommendation short: A player who depends on forgivability and does not have the head speed of a pro will not find a comparable club on the market. Especially the combination with the in-house ArmRQ shafts makes Beres so special. There is no question that for a Beres set you have to dig a little deeper into your pocket. However, most Beres players like to do this and never switch back.
